The task
Made at Méridien. Tell the story of the Grand Egyptian Museum's centrepiece, a colossus of Ramesses II, from the Aswan quarry to the atrium it stands in now.
The result
A scroll-driven feature live on mrdn.world. Two 3D models were built for it, the Grand Egyptian Museum itself and the Great Temple of Ptah at Memphis, reconstructed as it stood. The colossus model was sourced. Getting custom models into the Mapbox engine was the main technical challenge of the piece. The story rests on deep historical research, done with Egyptologist Susanna Thomas, author of Ramesses, Loved by Ptah, and along the way it untangled a long-standing mix-up between two different Ramesses II statues that even major publications repeated. 362K views on Reddit.
