An interactive map of France asking one question: how much land holds the same number of people as Paris? Point anywhere and the communes around the cursor gather until they hold 2.1 million people.
The task
Self-set. My wife saw the Russia version of this map and asked how the same idea would look for France. That question was enough.
The result
An interactive map built in D3: point anywhere and the communes around the cursor gather until they hold as many people as Paris, 2.1 million. In the emptiest middle of the country the patch grows to 35,761 square kilometres, 340 times the area of the capital.
