3D Gaussian splatting, explained

June 2026 · Méridien

An interactive explainer of 3D Gaussian splatting: how photographs of real places and objects become scenes you can move through. Made at Méridien with Datum and Gezin Studio.

The task

Made at Méridien: explain an emerging 3D technology to a general reader without losing the technical ground, and let the reader feel it rather than read about it.

The result

A scroll-driven explainer live at 3dgs-explainer.mrdn.world, built around seven experimental splat scenes captured for the piece. The demonstration flower, a King protea, is 300,000 splats in a 6.6 MB file. Made with Datum (scenes and production) and Gezin Studio (video and photography).

My role: made at Méridien.
